The reaction of starch and ethylene-oxide giving hydroxy-ethyl starch (HES) can be controlled by near infra-red spectroscopy (NIR)

English. The controlled parameter is the molar substitution (MS), which is measured by means of a probe directly from the neutralized and filtered reaction solution. According to the type of HES (200/0.5, 130/0.4 or 50/0.2) the measured MSdepends on the concentration of HES in the solution. To prevent distorted results the content of PIES 130/0.4 and HES 50/0.2 must be adjusted to 25 % (w/v) for this individual calibration. Only in the case of HES 200/0.5 the concentration can vary between 19 and 29 % for measuring the MS. Sodium chloride as a byproduct of the process does not effect the measurement up to 10 % NaCl in the sample. The temperature of the solution does not influence the result significantly (in the range of 20 to 34 degrees C). The reproducibility of the MS determination is good. The day-to-day standard deviation of 25 repetitions is +/- 0.005 for a sample with MS = 0.405. The relative standard deviation is 1,1 %. Nevertheless the biggest problem for the determination of MS by NIR is ethylene glycol (EG), the most important by-product of the reaction. If the concentration of EG differs significantly from that in the calibration samples, the calibration of the method must be revised.

German. Die Umsetzung von Starke mit Ethylenoxid zu Hydroxyethylstarke (HES) kann mittels Nah-lnfrarot-Spektroskopie (NIR) kontrolliert werden. Als eine der Kenngrossen fungiert die Molare Substitution (MS), welche uber eine Tauchsonde direkt aus der neutralisierten und filtrierten HES-Losung gemessen wird. Die Konzentration des gelosten HES beeinflusst das NlR-Ergebnis in Abhangigkeit vom HES-Typ. Wahrend HES 200/0.5 im Konzentrationsbereich von 19 bis 29 % konstante Ergebnisse liefert, mussen fur die Typen HES 130/0.4 und HES 50/0.2 die Messlosungen (fur die hier beschriebene Kalibration) auf 25 % HES verdunnt werden. Die beim Syntheseprozess auftretenden NaCI-Konzentrationen bis ca. 10% beeintrachtigen die Messung nicht. Die Probentemperatur (zwischen 20 und 34°C) hat bei der vorliegenden Kalibration nur einen unwesentlichen Einfluss auf das Messergebnis. Die Reproduzierbarkeit der Messergebnisse ist sehr gut. Kritisch fur die NlR-Bestimmungen ist dagegen der Gehalt am Synthesenebenprodukt Ethylenglycol. Sollte sich der Anteil an Ethylenglycol in der Losung signifikant andern, muss die Kalibration der NlR-Methode aktualisiert werden.
