Evergreen platanus: Evaluation of F1 hybrids, vegetative propagation by stem cuttings
1996
Noussia, P.
The performance of F1 hybrids arising from controlled crosses among evergreen, semievergreen and deciduous plane trees, was evaluated with respect to growth characters (height) and qualitative traits (stem form, crown shape, branch type and forking). The results obtained indicated that the growth of F1 generation hybrids depends upon the specific combining ability of the parental species participating in the cross since the three families of hybrids were significantly different regarding growth and stem form. The most promising family that combined fast growth, straightness, open crown, and absence of forking was the first one. The progeny of family two showed intermediate performance, whereas family three was poor in growth as its offsprings were dwarf and busah like. In the rooting experiments the effects of genotype, age of donor trees cutting type, growing medium and auxin treatment were investigated.
