Silvopastoral systems: there is hope for rehabilitating degraded lands in arid and semi-arid India

Like many tropical countries India suffers fron severe land degradation. As both human being and livestock populations increase, so does the demand for timber, fuelwood and fodder, perpetuating the cycle of deforestation and degradation. Today the gap between demand and supply for timber stands at 55%, firewood 74%, green fodder 77% and dry fodder 51%. This article reports on how silvopastoral systems can help improve degraded lands and at the same time provided the much needed fuelwood, and fodder to help narrow the gap between supply and demand.
