English. As an important component of biodiversity genetic variation is the topic of a number of research projects. Their role and objective in ecosystems research are described, followed by examples of ecological genetics research for assessing biodiversity. Isozyme gene markers and molecular markers as tools as well as their adaptation and optimisation for forest trees are dealt with. Examples show their application at different taxonomic levels. The function of genetic variation is illustrated by investigations on the enzyme phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) as model system. At the level of populations within species, investigations on diversity are dealing with spatial and temporal variation of genetic structures. Results on silver fir and European beech are examples. The presentation of results concludes with the integration of different population genetic processes in the simulation model ECO-GENE as a tool for analysing the complex interactions and for estimating the genetic effects of silviculture

Deren Rolle und Ziele in der Oekosystemforschung werden beschrieben, gefolgt von Beispielen oekologisch-genetischer Forschung zur Erfassung von Biodiversitaet. Isoenzym-Genmarker und molekulare Merker als methodische Hilfsmittel sowie deren Anpassung und Optimierung fuer Waldbaeume werden dargestellt. Es folgen Beispiele ihrer Anwendung auf unterschiedlichen taxonomischen Ebenen. Die funktionale Bedeutung genetischer Variation wird durch Modelluntersuchungen am Beispiel des Enzymsystems Phosphoenolpyruvat Carboxylase (PEPC) illustriert. Auf der Ebene von Populationen in Arten befassen sich Untersuchungen zurDiversitaet mit der raeumlichen und zeitlichen Variation genetischer Strukturen. Befunde bei Tanne und Buche dienen als Beispiele. Die Integration der verschiedenen populationsgenetischen Prozesse zur Abbildung raeumlicher und zeitlicher Variation in dem Simulationsmodell OeKO-GEN zur Analyse der komplexen Wechselwirkung sowie zur Abschaetzung forstlichen Handelns auf die genetischen Strukturen schliesst die Darstellung der Forschungsaktivitaeten ab
