Effect of moisture content in rye grain layers on its distribution and temperature in a grain silo

Laboratory experiments were carried out to measure the moisture content (m.c.) and temperature of rye grain in a silo after five- and ten-day storage. At the same moisture content in top grain layers (0.099 kg/kg) in all three experiments, the bottom layer m.c. varied within 0.163-0.220 kg/kg. The differences in m.c. between top and bottom layers determined moisture diffusion and intensified grain respiration processes. In all cases the average grain m.c. increased during storage. The grain temperature at definite points of the silo was 21-25 deg C. Wet grain expanded increasing the pressure of grain layer on the walls of silo
