Effect of haymaking technology and anhydrous ammonia addition on the content of beta-carotene in alfalfa hay

In an semi-operation trial, the influences of current feed harvest and of anhydrous ammonia added to alfalfa hay on the beta-carotene content were studied during the hay drying up and storage. Changes in the beta-carotene content were examined both in total hay and its parts - in leaves and stalks. The highest beta-carotene losses, as compared to the content in original material, were observed during the wilting when, due to bad weather conditions, 48.1 % and 90 % of original beta-carotene content were lost during wilting to 62 % or 72 % dry matter. The addition of ammonia to the hay stored before drying up caused a higher reduction of beta-carotene content as compared with the control hay not treated chemically. Higher losses of beta-carotene were also found in leaves themselves of ammoniated hay as compared to the hay before storage (91.9 % vs. 63.3 %).
