Changes in soil microflora due to clear felling

Felling measures in a forest stand either in case of thinning or in case of clear felling change substantially the locality climate. They result in the increase of air and soil temperatures during the growing season. The following parameters were studied: number and structure of microbial communities, biomass weight and soil microflora activity under a closed or thinned (by moderate thinning) Norway spruce stand. The parameters were compared to an early clearcut area (1-3 years after felling) and an overgrowing clearcut (4-6 yers after felling) and with soil under a beech stand. Thinning of the spruce stand and particularly its felling led to the increase of biological activity which resulted in increase of number of soil microflora (2-6x), more intensive decomposition of cellulose, increase in soil respiration and decrease in C/N ratio in the organic matter of surface humus layers from 27.7 and 23.0 to 22.2 and 20.7.
