Current information on mechanisms of induction and inhibition of the mammalian defence system is summarised. Particular attention is paid to functions of the immune system of piglets in the early ontogenetic and the postnatal periods.The gradual development of the nonspecific defence system, dynamics of cell-mediated and humoral immunity in growing piglets, and efficacy of individual components of the immune system are described.
