Contraction of horticultural substrates depending on kind and volume proportions of the components

Effects of different components and their proportion by volume on the contraction of horticultural substrates were studied. The substrates based on low moor peat supplemented with increasing amounts of high moor peat, composted pine bark and sand were used. The experiments included also a substrate compound of municipal waste compost with addition of variable amounts of composted pine bark. Close correlation among the kind and proportion of particular components and substrate contraction was observed. The substrates of low and high moor peat showed the highest contraction tendency along the whole range of composition changes. Relatively small contraction changes characterized the substrates consisted of composted bark and municipal wastes
