Forestry and forest policy in Ukraine
1998
Weber, N. | Lavny, V.
Ukraine, an independent state in Eastern Europe since 1991, with 603.700 qkm and 51Million inhabitants, has a forest coverage of only 15%. A large part of this resource is concentrated in the west of the country, especially in theCarpathian mountains. The most frequent stand type are scotch pine forests and oak forests. As a result of large-scale overcutting after World War 2, the age-structure of the forests is unbalanced. Most of the forests belong to the state and are administered by several ministeries (forestry, agriculture, defense). In 1994, Ukraine passed a forest law which confirmes this ownership structure. However, the new constitution of the country enables allforms of ownership. One of the most important challenges for Ukrainian forestry in future is the afforestation of large-scale areas (up to 4 million ha) in agricultural regions where the soils are severely endangered by erosion.
