[Potential and utilization of waste water at Jatiluhur irrigated land (West Java, Indonesia)]

The growing number of population in Indonesia is consequently followed by the raising demand for food, especially rice. Growing rice needs water for irrigation. In 1990, the water demand for irrigation about 78,5 billion meter cubic/year or 88,8 percent of the total need. It cannot be denied that from 78.5 billion meter cubic water used for irrigation is not entirely for growing rice; part of it is loss through leaks and subsequently flows uselessly to the sea. This condition is very much regretted since high investments are needed to provide sufficient irrigation water. The research have been carried out in Jatiluhur irrigation areas and tertiary block of BTt5-Ki and BTt6-Ka, Karawang. The objective of this research is to identify the leaks occur in water system of weirs or outlet structures in rivers until drainage canals as well as the recommended remedial work. Implementation of the research result for effective use of irrigation water will useless without support from the farmer. This is due to the fact that remedial effort have to be done integratedly in a tertiary scheme. Good public information system about the importance of effective irrigation and high investment to provide it are therefore compulsory in order to prevent waste and motivate the irrigation users to do their own remedial work.
