Folacin in infant food

The total and free folacin concentration in human milk and in the chosen kinds of fortified and unfortified powdered milk products designed for the nutrition of infants was assayed. Special attention was paid to the proportional level of the free form of this vitamin. With regard to the human milk (total folacin content equal to 1.77 +/- 0.20 up to 2.65 +/- 0.27 microg/100 ml), in which the free folacin content represented 72.5 to 80.2 %, the similar proportional level was detected in Eviko and Feminar samples. The remarkable free vitamin proportion was found in fortified Aptamil 1 and Aptamil 2 samples where the concentration of 3.93 +/- 0.23 and 3.65 +/- 0.19 microg/100 ml constituted only 36.8 to 38 % of the total form.
