The effect of technological factors of corn harvest on fermentation parameters, nutritive value and intake of corn silage

The objective of the paper was to determine the effect of harvest date and length of corn chops on changes in the nutritive value of plant parts, coefficients of organic nutrient digestibility and intake of corn silage dry matter. Evaluation of changes in the proportions of corn plant parts in relation to harvest date (phenological stage) indicated that corn plants harvested at 40 % dry matter content had higher proportions of ears and lower proportions of other parts (stalk, husks and leaves). Organic matter (OM) digestibility of all plant parts decreased if harvested at a later phenological stage resulting in a decrease in OM digestibility of the whole plant by 4.1 % (69.2 % vs. 73.3 %), and in a depression of the yield of digestible OM per ha by 12.2 %. Fermentation parameters were not demonstrated to be influenced by either harvest date or length of corn chops.
