Influence of inbreeding and heterosis on some indices of dinitrogen fixation in lucerne (Medicago sativa)
1999
Holy, J. (Agrogen, Zelesice (Czech Republic). Slechtitelska Stanice)
Six progenies of clones, selected from the population ZE-N2-I, showing relatively higher dinitrogen fixation, were evaluated in a glasshouse trial in generations I1, I2 and F1. The hybrid generation traced to open pollination of the I2 plants. The level of evaluated traits differed significantly between the generations. Inbreeding depression in comparison of I1 with I2 plants amounted to 20, 21, 14, 25, 17, 0 and 25 % and heterosis in comparison of F1 with I1plants to 35, 41, 32, 20, 17, 21 and 29 % for green matter, dry matter of above-ground parts, weight of roots, dry matter of roots, number of nodules, height of individual plants and yield of crude protein in above-ground parts, respectively. Only the strain with the highest number of nodules proved heterosis for nitrogenase activity, measured by acetylene reduction.
