Effect of restricted food intake and blood collection on hormones, growth factors and related substances in plasma of female domestic nutria (Myocastor coypus)

The aim of this study was to identify a number of hormones and growth factors in the blood of female domestic nutria (Myocastor coypus) and to examine the effects of short term dietary energy restriction and blood collection on their concentrations. It was observed that food restriction induced a significant decrease in plasma P, significant increases in plasma IGF-I, T4 and cAMP, but had no effect on IGFBP-3, E, T3 or cGMP concentrations. The chronic blood collection regime resulted in significant changes in most of the assayed substances except IGF-I. These observations indicate (1) that domestic nutria secrete IGF-I, IGFBP-3, P,E, T3, T4, cAMP and cGMP, (2) that blood collection can affect plasma IGFBP-3, T3, T4, P, E, cAMP and cGMP level, and (3) that nutritional status influences the concentration of IGF-I, P, T4 and cAMP. These substances therefore have the potential to be mediators of the effects of altered nutrition on physiological processes in this species.
