Influence of necrotic disease of beech branches (Fagus sylvatica) on the momentary and expected foliage loss

Deramification process (branch pruning) in the beech crowns is affected by necrotic tracheomycosis disease located in the branches. The loss of foliage apparently is a negative phenomenon of the deramification. The number of broken branches was 1,833 per 1 ha of the forest stand during the growing season 1997. We found that deramification caused momentary defoliation as high as 0.022 ha of leaf area per 1 ha of the forest stand. Moreover, altogether 567 broken branches per 1 ha of the forest stand were found as a result of deramification during dormancy period. The prognosis of the leaf area deficit for the next period has been given. This deficiency per 1 ha of the beech pole-stage stand shows and increasing trend in the range from 0.022 ha in 1997 to 1.061 ha in 2002.
