Efficacy trials for grapevine leafhopper control in Piedmont [Vitis vinifera L.]
1998

English. In a Moscato bianco cv. vineyard usually infested by leafhopper (Empoasca vitis), efficacy trials were carried out for four years in a row, to control the pest using registered and experimental products. Most of tested chemicals (acrinathrin, buprofezin, chlorpyrifos methyl and ethyl, chlorpyrifos ethyl microencapsulated, dimethoate, ethofenprox, flufenoxuron, fenitrothion, pyrrole, pyridaphenthion, quinalphos) were able to control leafhopper for more than a month, showing, with application made at late cluster pre-closing growth stage (July 13-26), eventual good side effect on grape berry moths; the most effective insecticides resulted to be acrinathrin and ethofenprox, even if the latter could favour mites insurgence. The level of action provided by M-PEDE and by summer mineral oil, considering their relative low toxicity, is quite interesting and little below to that obtained with traditional standards. The one year assessments regarding the effects of leafhoppers damage on the yield did not show a significative difference between treated and untreated plots, although a worse yield quality was evident in plots more attacked by leafhoppers
