Nitrates and heavy metals content in crops in Bialystok and Lomza areas

The object of analyses were 789 crop samples cereals, potatoes, vegetables and apples. All samples were taken between 1992 and 1995 in the areas of Bialystok and Lomza. The permissible content of nitrates was exceeded from 1 percent to 10 percent of the analysed number of samples. The highest content of nitrates was present in carrot and red beet and the lowest one in cabbage and onion. The permissible content of heavy metals was exceeded in a small number of samples and it was only slighty than valid standards, stated by the Minister of Health and Social Welfare in the instructions of 31.03.1993
