Opening up stands - Prerequisite to ecologically compatible application of forest technology

Compared with the situation of 25 years ago, the continuing development of technology in respect to mechanical wood-harvesting, in conjunction with correspondingly adapted, consistent opening-up of stands, has not only been considerably cost-effective and brought improved labor safety and ergonomy, but has also contributed greatly to progress in view of the ecological aspects of stand and soil conservation in a manner never before thought possible. When rows are spaced 20 mapart in mechanically-accessible terrain, then a practice-relevant compromise can be attained for the entire harvesting period in view of applying conservation principles on soil and stand care, machine weight and labor speed. - The sustainable forest striven for can only be economically and ecologically managed with success, if permanent opening-up procedures provide for economic and effective labor performance. - Despite all success in the past 25 years, there is still much to accomplish before the goal of optimized accessibility has been attained for the whole country.
