Lactones: structure and biological properties

Compounds with the lactone moiety, mainly natural, are reviewed. Special attention was paid to lactones with interesting odour and lactones exhibiting specific biological activity. Among odoriferous lactones were presented those isolated from essential oils as well as those found in food and aromatizing alcoholic beverages. Structures of lactones exhibiting antifungal, antibacterial and antitumor activity are presented. Compounds with lactone moiety, which play on important role in insect development: pheromonesand feeding deterents are also reviewed
