Mites (Acari, Oribatida) of young Scots pine forest in the region polluted by the "Wistom" chemical factory in Tomaszow Mazowiecki

The soil oribatid (Acari) of young Scots pine forest polluted by the "Wistom" chemical factory were investigated in spring and autumn of 1991 and 1992. The polluted plots were situated at distance of 1 km (plot 1), 3.8 km (plot 2) and 9 km (polt 3) from the pollution source, and control plot (4) was chosen 14 km from this source. Each time 10 samples of 17 square cm in area and 20 cm deep were taken in areas of forest floor covered with dead needles, and each was further divided into 4 subhorisons: Ol, Of/h, AEes' and AEes''. In polluted region, the concentration of sulphur, which predominated in air pollution, was higher than in the control plot. This pollution decreased the species number and species diversity of these mites, as well as their dominance structure in the most polluted soil, compared to the control plot. Sensitive to pollutants were Adoristes ovatus, Carabodes subarcticus, Diapterobates humeralis, Phthiracarus borealis, Scheloribates latipes and Tectocepheus velatus, while Chamobates schuetzi tolerated them
