Characteristics of plant stand can be described by using plant architecture parameters. The most important are: leaf area index (LAI), height of plant stand (h) and leaf area density (az). It is necessary to estimate specific leaf area (SLA) for indirect determination of LAI. Specific leaf area (SLA) for hops (Humulus lupulus L., cv. 'Savinja golding') was estimated on an experimental field IHP Zalec during an extremely warm and dry growth season in 1993. SLA was the highest (21 m2kg-1) at the time of first measurement, on the 10th May, afterwards it gradually decreased and was 12 m2kg-1 at the time of the last measurement, on the 16th August. The changing of SLA according to the height of plants in the growth season has been estimated and the differences were statistically insignificant.
