Native Slovene breeds of domestic animals - The basic review

Native Slovenian breeds of domestic animals represented a source of living or an important source of income for family farms until recently. According to the FAO criteria all native Slovenian breeds of domestic animals are endangered. The article reviews the following Slovenian breeds of domestic animals: the Lipizzaner horse, the Cika cattle, the Bovec sheep, the Jezersko-Solcava sheep, the Istrian Pramenka sheep, the Bela krajina Pramenka sheep, the Krskopolje pig, the Styrian hen and the Karst shepherd dog. Geographic origin, the purpose of breeding, morphological characteristics, size and structure of population besides historical background and breeding data are shown for some breeds.
