The quality of forages in Slovenia

Chemical composition and nutritive value of grass silage samples (n = 38), hay samples (n = 87) and maize silage samples (n = 57) which were analysed during the seasons 1997/98 and 1998/99 in the laboratory of Agricultural Institute of Slovenia are presented. The samples originated from farms located in the central part of Slovenia. Literature review of trends in silage and hay quality since 1970 is given as well. In the seasons 1997/98 and 1998/1999, grass silages contained on average 438g/kg dry matter (DM). In DM they contained 144g/kg crude protein (CP), 285g/kg crude fibre (CF), 103g/kg ash, 9.87 MJ/kg metabolizable energy (ME), 5.86 MJ/kg net energy for lactation (NEL), 73.1g/kg metabolizable protein with regard to the supply of rumen microorganisms with energy (PBE) and 79.1g/kg metabolizable protein with regard to the supply of rumen microorganisms with nitrogen (PBN). Hay contained on average 110g CP, 312g CF, 80g ash, 8.78 MJ ME, 5.10 MJ NEL, 73.0g PBE and 61.5g PBN per kg of DM. The average concentration of DM in maize silages was 329g/kg. Maize silages contained 75g CP, 216g CF, 39g ash, 10.64 MJ ME, 6.41 MJ NEL, 64.0g PBE and 41.9g PBN per kg of DM. During the last 30 years the DM concentration in grass silages was increased from about 300g/kg to 450g/kg and in maize silages from 250 to 330g/kg. The concentration of CF in grass silages decreased from 340 to 290g/kg DM, in hay from 330 to 310g/kg DM and in maize silages from 290 to 210g/kg SS.
