The Styrian hen

The Styrian hen is the only native breed of hens in Slovenia. The native country of the hen is the southern part of Austrian Styria and the region between the rivers Mura and Sava in the Slovenian part of Styria. The Styrian hen was already mentioned in the 14th century. During the history the breed was in crisis several times. Four colour types of the Styrian hen existed. Today only partridge-like hens are present in such extent that we can speak about the threatened breed or about the endangered breed. The average values for body weight, weight of egg and laying of today's Styrian hens are equal or a bit lower to the reports in literature for the period between 1950 and 1955. The production of the Styrian hen is too modest in comparison with the modern breeds or cross-breeds. It is precious because of its breed and nativity. It is adapted to our conditions and owing to its modesty and characteristics the Styrian hen is a farmyard hen.
