Istrian cattle - a case of conservation the autochtone breed in Istrian of Croatia

The Istrian cattle is autochtonous breed from Croatia. It is the cattle from Podolian group. The breed was used for meat and as draught power. It is well adopted to poor nutrition conditions and hard work in karst. Animals have big frame, relatively long horns and mature late. Fifty years ago the breed was widely spread in Istria, now there are only 113 breeding females and 23 males left. Activities in conservation of the Istrian cattle have been going on since 1984. The conservation is carried out in situ and ex situ. The breed is registrated in the EAAP and DAD.IS data banks. In 1994 all animals of the Istrian breed in Croatia were entered in herdbook which is managed by local selection service. In 1995 a Programme for conservation of Istrian cattle was created. The definition of autochtonous Croatian breed, its management and conservation are determined by the 1997 animal husbandry law. The conservation of certain number of animals and genetic material is financed by the state budget. Financial stimulations for breeders are regulated by the law on financial stimulations and compensations in agriculture.
