Four decades of research and development activities in citrus
1999
Baksh, Nadeer
The citrus industry is the most important player in the local fruits sub-sector. Research into citrus has been historically associated with the Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture/The University of the West Indies (UWI), Co-operative Citrus Growers Association, the Ministry of Agriculture and , more recently, Caroni (1975) Ltd. Research and development activities spanning four decades, the 1960s, the 1970s, the 1980s and the 1990s are highlighted. The 1960s were characterised by intensive research into crop by UWI and high fruit production from growers. Research declined during the 1970s and 1980s and the industry was in a slump. During this period production dropped sharply. Research and development activities intensified during the 1990s and production is on the increase. Major successes, failures and considerations for the future are discussed.
