The bird assemblages in two isolated woods during autumn and winter in Lower Savinja valley

The density and species composition of the bird assemblages during non-breeding period (October-February, 1997/98) found in two isolated woods (10 and 1.9ha respectively) in Lower Savinja valley are described. Bird assemblages were studied three times per months using transect method. 28 species were recorded in the small wood and 30 species in the bigger wood. Of these species only Parus major in small wood and 9 species (i.e. Fringilla coelebs, Parus major, Sitta europaea, Parus caeruleus, Parus palustris, Dendrocopus major, Regulus regulus, Troglodytes troglodytes and Corvus cornix) in bigger wood were a permanent part of the assemblage during the entire period. The highest density was found in the smallest wood with a density of 2.5 (November) - 22.6 (February) birds/ha. In bigger wood density was between 4.0-5.0 birds/ha. In small wood I found significant correlation between number of species and bird density (rS = 0.64, P 0.05, n 0.05, n = 15). The most numerous bird was Passer montanus in small wood and Parus major in bigger wood.
