Long-term soil fertility management in maize/finger-millet system in the marginal bari lands of western hills of Nepal (1997-1999)

Since 1997 an experiment was started at ARS, Lumle (1660m asl) to develop suitable crop rotation and utilize their crop residues for maintaining soil fertility in maize based cropping system. The objective of the experiment was to find out the response of organic and inorganic fertilizers on crop yields and to measure the changes in soil fertility in response to manure, fertilizers, crop residues and legumes in crop rotation. In this experiment, ten different combinations of maize based cropping system and organic and inorganic fertilizers with an without residues were taken as treatments and replicated three times. The three years data of maize shows that grain yield with respect to treatments are significantly different whereas the millet grain yield was insignificant. Maize grain yield gradually decreased over years. The highest mean maize grain yield was recorded in the treatment of FYM equivalent to 120 kg N/ha followed by the treatment of FYM equivalent to 60 kg N/ha with 60:30:20 kg N:P2O5:K2 o/ha (1695 kg/ha). Significant effect of treatments on millet yield was not observed. When combining the yield of maize and millet effect of treatments were significant among treatments. Application of FYM equivalent to 60 kg N/ha through organic manure plus 60:30:20 kg N:P2O2:K2 O/ha as well as 120 kg N/ha alone supplied through organic manure gave the highest grain yield of maize+millet 2273 kg/ha respectively. Nutrients uptake by maize and millet also followed the same pattern of grain yield of maize and millet. Application of 3 time/ha in the second year increased soil pH from less than 5.0 to 5.5. Available P increased with the addition of high dose of organic or/and inorganic fertilizer. Slight increase of total N in all the treatments was also recorded. Organic carbon and exchangeable K remained more or less same.
