Outreach research reports on vegetable crops in the western hills of Nepal

A total of seven outreach research activities consisting of FFVT on rayo, radish, cabbage and cauliflower and PPVT on sponge gourd were conducted at different AER/OR sites during 1998 and 1999 winter and spring season respectively. FFVT on rayo were tested at different OR sites to know the varietal performance and farmers preferences for the varieties viz. Mankamana, Tankhuwa, Marpha BL and Khumal BL. Mankamna produced significantly the highest fresh yield at many locations and preferred by farmers. Tankhuwa was also preferred by some farmers due to its delayed bolting and better cooking quality. Among the four radish varieties tested at different OR sites. Minu early gave the highest marketable yield in many locations. But farmers of some locations preferred Lumle Red due to its shiny red colour, early harvest and good taste. Four varieties of cauliflower were evaluated to identify their yield potential. The yield of Kibogaint Holland was highest during 1998 whereas snow Crown gave the highest curd yield of 19.22 t/ha in 1999. Different hybrid varieties of cabbage were tested at different AER/OR sites for their varietal performance and consumers' preferences. Green Coronet produced significantly the highest head yield at all locations during both the years. However many farmers preferred T-621 for its earliness marketable head size and good cooking quality. PPVT on sponge gourd was conducted to know the performance of varieties along with planting of single or double plant per hill. Baisakhi produced almost double the fresh yield than Pusa Chikni regardless of number of plant per hill. Similarly, planting of two plants per hill produced 139 percent higher fresh yield than planting single plant per hill.
