Effects of high levels of Hg on senescence - proline accumulation and stress enzyme activities of maize plants [Zea mays L. - mercury]

English. Intact plants of Zea mays L. var. Colt were grown for eight days with different concentrations of Hg (0, 50, 100, 200 and 400 mM). When exposed to Hg stress, the maize plants suffered a decrease in plant growth and chlorophyll a and b content in shoots. Hg levels increased with increasing Hg content in the medium, but were much higher in roots than in shoots. On the contrary, K content decreased both in the roots and shoots. An increase in proline content was found in the whole plant with increasing Hg in the medium. Soluble proteins increased in shoots but decreased in roots, where Hg content might reach values 100 times higher than those of shoots. Hg increased peroxidase activities, but decreased amylase activities in shoots
Show more [+] Less [-]Italian. [Piante intatte di Zea mays L. var. Colt sono state coltivate per otto giorni con concentrazioni diverse di Hg (0, 50, 100, 200, 400 mM). Le piante di mais esposte allo stress da Hg subivano una diminuzione della crescita e dei contenuti di clorofilla a e b nei germogli. I livelli di Hg crescevano all'aumentare del contenuto di Hg del substrato di coltura, ma erano molto piu' elevati nelle radici rispetto ai germogli. Al contrario, il contenuto di K diminuiva sia nelle radici, sia nei germogli. E' stato riscontrato un aumento dei contenuti di prolina nell'intera pianta al crescere della concentrazione di Hg nel substrato. Le proteine solubili aumentavano nei germogli ma diminuivano nelle radici, mentre il contenuto di Hg poteva raggiungere valori 100 volte piu' elevati di quelli dei germogli.
