Molecular forms of acid phosphatase of boar seminal plasma

Electrophoretic studies on boar seminal plasma showed the presence of four molecular forms of acid phosphate which, in different variants, occurs in the epididymal, prostatic and vesicular fluid. The activity of the dominant epididymal molecular forms, as shown by densitometric analysis of electrophoregrams, represented about 90 percent of the total acid phosphatase activity of the seminal plasma. Among the fluids analysed, only in those of the vesicular glands the activity was single molecular form of acid phosphatase was observed. Acid phosphatase activity was significantly correlated with that of alkaline phosphatase as well as with the seminal plasma antioxidants of low molecular weight - ergothioneine and L-ascorbic acid. There was no significant correlation between acid phosphatase activity and glutathione content. Ergothioneine may have an important function in protecting the phosphatase proteins SH-groups of boar seminal plasma
