Effect of sewage sludge on the nitrate content of seepage water
2000
Bernsdorf, S. (Martin-Luther-Universitaet, Halle (Germany. Inst. fuer Agrartechnik und Landeskultur) | Borg, H.
The effect of different amounts of sewage sludge in soils on the nitrate concentration of seepage water was investigated in pot experiments with 2 different soils. Plant yield and N content of the plants were determined, too. No clear relationship was found between the amount of sewage sludge in the soil and the nitrate concentration of seepage water, because N uptake by plants and N content of the soil influenced the results. If sewage sludge is to be used in agriculture, its application must be timed in accordance with the nutritional demands of the crop and other N inputs to avoid groundwater contamination
