On the basis of miniplot experiments conducted over the years 1997-99 in allotments situated near the "Hutmen" smelter in Wroclaw (Poland) the amount of heavy metals uptake in the yield was determined for the vegetables: red beet, lettuce, cabbage, carrot and haulm and root of parsley and celery. From the investigations it follows that the amount of heavy metals uptake was more affected by the content of metals in the plant than yield height. Large differences between uptakes of the respective metals occurred. The uptake was largest for: copper - parsley roots and red beets, cadmium - carrot, red beet and celery roots, zinc - red beet, lead - parsley and celery roots, nickel - parsley roots and red beet, chromium - celery and parsley roots
