Fusarium oxysporum Schlecht. F.sp. gladioli (fog) has been recorded on saffron (Crocus sativus L.) cultivated near l'Acquila (Central Italy) in the period 1995-98. The fungus is the major limiting factor of stigma yield and the disease occurred only when corms harvested from infected crops were planted. Field trials were carried out in two localities of the L'Aquila province and corms, harvested from fields where the disease was present or absent, treated or not-treated with prochloraz (a.i. 3.0 g/l), were planted in randomized plots. The corms harvested from healthy fields and the infected/contaminated corms treated with prochloraz before planting produced healthy plants and healthy corms. To obtain pathogen-free corms, we suggest making careful inspections of saffron fields during flowering (October), when it is possible to observe the health and it is easy to find symptoms and to isolate fog from infected crops. Our experiments show that the saffron corms harvested from infected crops treated with prochloraz produce healthy plants and healthy corms. However, there are some problems on the practical use of prochloraz as a dressing of saffron corms, because such an active ingredient is not authorized for this crop
