Cloning of plant genes inhibiting bax lethality in sacharomyces cerevisiae: a model system for the isolation of genes linked to the apoptotic process
1998
Damianova, R.
Initial questions about the possible existence of mechanisms and the role of physiological programs of cell death emerged at the end of the previous century from the study of animal development, but only in recent years has it been understood that all cells of unicellular and multicellular organisms are programmed to self destruction program. This physiological process of self suicide, called programmed cell death PCD or apoptosis, has been found to be an intrinsic part of the development of organisms and to have an evolutionarily conserved nature. The experimental approach that we chose to utilize in the present study was a genetic screen in yeast which could make possible the identification of components taking part in the repression mechanism of the programmed cell death in plants.
