Food demand and poverty during transition in Slovenia, Bulgaria and Romania

The focus of the study is however on Slovenia where a Household Budget Survey for 1993 was made available. For Bulgaria tabulated data from annual Household Budjet Surveys for the period 1990-94 were used, while for Romania only secondary data from other sources for the period 1992-94 were available. The consumption patterns for Slovenia and Bulgaria are analyzed using various Engel curve specifications, while Romania the research follows Alexandry's, 1996 study. Income-expenditure elasticities are estimated for different food items in Slovenia, and for different food items as well as for other expenditure groups and services in Bulgaria. In Romania, demand elasticities for the main food items are calculated.
