On the weak phototropic response of the maize variety strawberry popcorn [Zea mays L.]

English. Maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings, like those of most other higher plants, have pronounced phototropism, that is, they bend vigorously toward a source of unilateral blue light. We investigated phototropism in a naturally occurring variety of maize, strawberry popcorn. We measured the bending of the coleoptile in response to unilateral blue light, given either in 30 sec or 1 hour, and found that strawberry popcorn and B73, an inbred maize line used as a control, responded to the same light fluences, but strawberry popcorn bent to a much lesser extent. Bending in strawberry popcorn was also much less than that of B73 when seedlings were placed on a clinostat after irradiation to minimize the effects of gravity on the development of bending. Strawberry popcorn was crossed to B73 and analysis of segregation of the weak bending trait suggested that it was controlled by a single locus, which we name "modifier of phototropism". Finally, more than 50 other varieties of maize, including popcorns and lines from the Andean region that might be related to strawberry popcorn, were also tested and found to have a vigorous phototropic response, with the sole exception of Argentine popcorn. These results suggest that phototropism can be weak in some cultivars, and identify a locus that appears to regulate the magnitude of the response

Italian. [Le plantule di mais (Zea mays L.), come quelle di molte altre piante superiori, presentano un pronunciato fototropismo, cioe' si curvano fortemente verso una fonte di luce blu unilaterale. Noi abbiamo studiato il fototropismo in una varieta' di mais esistente allo stato naturale, la popcorn fragola. Abbiamo misurato la curvatura del coleottile in risposta alla luce blu unilaterale, irradiata sia per 30 secondi, sia per 1 ora, e abbiamo riscontrato che la popcorn fragola e la B73, una linea consanguinea di mais utilizzata come controllo, rispondevano alle medesime radiazioni luminose, ma la popcorn fragola si piegava in misura molto minore. La curvatura nella popcorn fragola era pure molto minore rispetto a quella della B73 quando le plantule venivano poste in un clinostato dopo l'irradiazione, allo scopo di minimizzare gli effetti della gravita' sullo sviluppo della curvatura. Popcorn fragola e' stata incrociata con B73 e l'analisi della segregazione del carattere curvatura debole faceva ritenere che essa sia controllata da un locus singolo, che noi denominiamo "modificatore del fototropismo". Infine, sono state saggiate piu' di 50 altre varieta' di mais, comprese le popcorn e linee provenienti dalla regione andina, che potrebbero essere collegate alla popcorn fragola; si e' riscontrato che queste varieta' presentano una risposta fototropica vigorosa, con la sola eccezione della popcorn argentina. Questi risultati fanno ipotizzare che il fototropismo possa essere debole in alcune cultivar e consentono di identificare un locus che sembra regolare l'ampiezza della risposta]
