Population dynamics and life-cycle of corn borers in South Atlantic European coast [Zea mays L. - Spain]

English. Sesamia nonagrioides Lef. And Ostrinia nubilalis Hbn. are the main pests of maize in the Mediterranean Countries. Population fluctuations of both species were studied in NW Spain through 1990-1996. The abundance of both species varied greatly between and within locations. Their attacks were very intense in 1995 and 1996, reaching 100% of damaged plants in two plots, 30-50% in a third one and 7% in a fourth plot. In several plots and years we found more than one larva per plant at harvest. The capture of adult moths made with pheromone traps indicate the existence of two generations, the first one flying in May and the second one in July-August. The larvae of first generation of both species rarely attack maize, but, by September, most plants have been colonized by S. nonagrioides and, in a lesser degree, by O. nubilalis larvae. Larvae of both species overwinter inside the dead plants of maize, that are usually left in the fields after harvesting by most farmers. Given the mild winter temperatures of the South Atlantic coast, most of them survive until the next spring and produce the adults of first generation. Cultural methods (e. g. destruction of plant stems) and the use of resistant maize genotypes could improve the management of maize borers, diminishing their economic damages

Italian. [Sesamia nonagrioides Lef. E Ostrinia nubilalis Hbn. Sono i principali parassiti del mais nei paesi mediterranei. Nel periodo dal 1990 al 1990, nel Nord-Ovest della Spagna, sono state studiate le fluttuazioni delle popolazioni di ambedue le specie. L'abbondanza delle stesse variava notevolmente fra ed entro le diverse aree. I loro attacchi sono risultati molto intensi nel 1995 e nel 1996, raggiungendo il 100% di piante danneggiate in due appezzamenti, il 30-50% in un terzo e il 7% in un quarto appezzamento. In numerosi appezzamenti e anni abbiamo rinvenuto piu' di una larva per pianta alla raccolta. Le catture degli adulti effettuate con trappole a feromoni dimostrano l'esistenza di due generazioni, la prima delle quali sfarfalla in maggio, mentre la seconda sfarfalla in luglio-agosto. Le larve di prima generazione di ambedue le specie attaccano raramente il mais,, ma, da settembre, la maggior parte delle piante veniva colonizzata dalle larve di S. nonagrioides e, in minor misura, di O. nubilalis. Le larve di ambedue le specie svernano all'interno dei residui della coltivazione, che vengono lasciati in campo dalla maggior parte degli agricoltori. A causa delle miti temperature invernali della costa sud-atlantica, la maggior parte di esse sopravvive fino alla primavera successiva e produce gli adulti di prima generazione. I metodi di controllo colturali (per esempio, la distruzione degli stocchi) e l'utilizzazione di genotipi di mais resistenti potrebbero migliorare la gestione delle minatrici del mais, diminuendo l'entita' del danno economico]
