A global buckwheat trading

Buckwheat (Fagopyrum spp.) or phapar is known historically for its nutritional and medicinal importance to oriental culture extending from Asia to other continents. Due to its limited volume for trade, the trading figures do not normally come under world trade statistics, yet few importing and exporting countries are attempting to maintain their figures. At present, the world export figure exceeds the import. The present volume of world export centers around 200,000 t, whereas the import around 175,000 t grains yield. Nepal's production figure is estimated to be around 20,000 t. Since late eighties, there has been some export from Nepal to India. Due to this export, farmers of Chitwan and Nawalparasi, Nepal were encouraged to grow buckwheat during winter but the trading trend has been very unstable. The statistics of Nepal shows the current export of buckwheat about 1000 t to India. This paper attempts to highlight a scenario of world trading of buckwheat and its prospects and limitations for Nepal.
