Effect of sprinkler irrigation and nitrogen fertilization on weed infestation of potatoes grown on a very light soil

Four field experiments were carried out over 1994-97 at Kruszyn Krajenski near Bydgoszcz on a loose sandy soil to investigate the effect of sprinkler irrigation and a varied nitrogen fertilization on weed infestation of two potato cultivars, "Drop" and "Mila". The most common weed species which occurred under irrigation included Agropyron repens, Galinsoga parviflora and Equisetum arvense. The impact of irrigation and fertilization on potato weed infestation was modified by weather conditions, especially rainfall, during the growing seasons researched. Sprinkler irrigation increased weed infestation, both mass and number of weeds. "Drop" potato stand showed a higher weed infestation, as compared to that of "Mila". A downward trend in both the mass and the number of weeds occurring on potato plantation - as average of both the cultivars and the period studied - was observed under an increased nitrogen fertilization
