Soil Oribatida mites (Acari) in young Scots pine forests exposed to the region polluted from the Torun "Polchem" chemical plant

The study investigated soil mites (Oribatida, Acari) in young Scots pine forest exposed to the pollution, mainly SO2, generated by the Torun "Polchem" chemical plant as compared with the control. The polluted plots were respectively, 1 km (plot 1), 2 km (plot 2) and 3.8 km away (plot 3), while the control - 32 km away from the polluter. For each plot and over each sampling period, 10 soil samples, 17 square cm x 20 cm deep, were taken the dead-needle-covered soil, and each sample was further divided into 2 organic (Ol, Of/h) and 2 mineral (AEes' and AEes'') horizons; 3 cm, 2 cm, 7.5 cm and 7.5 cm deep, respectively. Mites were extracted with high-gradient Tullgren funnels. In the polluted plots, the concentration of sulphur in soil was higher than in the control plot. Sulphur pollution increased the abundance of Oribatida, yet it decreased the species number, Shannon index and changed the mite dominance structure, especially near the polluter. Some species were sensitive to the sulphur pollution, while the others were tolerant
