Soil biochemical and microbiological activity in the Kujawy region over winter

Low temperature prevailing in the initial stages of growth of winter and spring plant cultivation limit the development and activity of mesophilic bacteria, making psychrophylic bacteria decisive. The temperature also affects seasonal changes in phosphatase activity as well as in organic phosphorus content. The aim of the present study was to determine the relationship between the number of psychrophilic and mesophilic bacteria and acid and alkaline phosphatase activity as well as organic phosphorus content. The research was carried out on typical soils of the Kujawy Region. The soil was sampled from the depth of 5-15 cm since November till March. The study determined a number of total bacterial microflora at the temperatures of 2 deg C and 20 deg C as well as acid and alkaline phosphatase activities and organic phosphorus content. The activity of both enzymes changed constantly over the study period with a rising trend in the soil sampled in March.
