Technology of forage harvesting by formation of the mats in the field just after cutting was investigated. Freshly mown green crop, crushed and pressed, was distributed in form of thin mat on the stubble to be naturally dried. At favourable weather the hay of good quality may be achieved after 48 hrs, whereas green crop for silage needs to be wilted just 3-5 hrs. Field drying rate of the mats 20-36 mm thick was studied. At air temperature 22 and 25.5 deg C the moisture content of mats dropped down to 46 and 28%, respectively, during 7 hrs. At solar radiation intensity increased from 190 to 800 W/square m, the drying rate of forage mats rose from 2.8 to 5.5 %/h
