Effect of sprinkler irrigation and nitrogen fertilization on weed infestation of spring cereals cultivated on a very light soil

Field experiments were carried out over 1994-99 at Kruszyn Krajenski near Bydgoszcz on a loose sandy soil to investigate the effect of sprinkler irrigation and varied nitrogen fertilization on weed infestation of spring barley and spring wheat. The most common weed species which occurred under irrigation included Setaria viridis, Polygonum convolvulus, Chenopodium album and Agropyron repens. The weed species composition observed in stands of cereals investigated was modified by sprinkler irrigation. The impact of factors tested on weed infestation of the cereal stand was modified by the rainfall of the growing seasons studied. The canopy of spring barley showed a higher weed infestation, both mass and the number of weeds, as compared to that of spring wheat. Sprinkler irrigation significantly affected weed infestation of cereals, an increase in the mass and the number of weeds occurring both in barley and wheat canopy. A higher nitrogen dose decreased the mass and the number of weeds in spring cereals
