In this paper some results on investigations on the comparison of microbiological and biochemical activity of the soil under two different crop managament systems are presented. On the basis of results obtained, Soil Biological Index (SBI) was formulated, and its correlation with the yields of spring barley and potatoes were analysed. The index includes the following parameters: activities of acid and alkaline phosphatases, dehydrogenase and microbial biomass content
