Production of Forage Crops Using Treated Sewage Effluent

The study was conducted at Khirbet Es-Samra Station to evaluate the production potential of some selected forage species irrigated by treated sewage effluent. Forage plants including Sudan grass (Sorghum bicolor), Mediterranean saltbush (Atriplex halimus), barley (Hordeum vulgare), Yellow corn (Zea maize) and fireweed (Kochia scoparia) were planted at the site during 1998 to 2000. Dry matter production ranged from 9 to 26 t ha-1 for saltbush, 25 to 69 t ha-1 far Sudan grass, 21 to 93 t ha-1 far fireweed, and 12 to 30 t ha-1 far yellow corn. Biomass production of barley was below expectations, it averaged 6.0 t DM ha-1 due to uncontrolled reasons. Following the management guidelines in terms of irrigation and cutting is very important far obtaining high forage production. Large tonnage of forage produced by these forage plants compared to 0.1 t ha-1 for using native rangelands necessitates more research far establishing a sound technical package for treated sewage effluent for forage production taking into consideration the environmental and ecological aspects.
