Due to the coppice-selection system practiced for centuries in the southern sector of the forest district of Siegen, situated where the state borderlines of North Rhine Westfalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse meet, a small population of hazel-grouse still habitats the area. Since the mid-eighties, contracted nature conservation measures have been carried out ot improve the biotopes for hazel-grouse. The success of these measures has now been investigated within the scope of a case study of one of the contracted projects. The project objective was to create structure-rich forest stands through small-scale pruning of over-aged shrub wood and the additional planting of various tree and shrub species, thus providing the hazel-grouse both cover and nourishment. The study reveals that the areas have positively developed in accordance with the objective. However, the main reason for this is less the expensive planting measures, but more the previously underestimated natural succession. The results show that expenditures for biotope-improvement measures can be reduced and that measures solely based on hazel-grouse habitat requirements are not sensible. Instead, measures must be planned and executed, which combine economic and silvicultural objectives.
