Application of neutron radiography as method in the analysis of wood

A non-destructive method is described applicable for the investigation of inner defects and especially the description of the moisture distribution in wooden samples, based on the transmission with neutrons. Contrary to the application of X- or gamma rays, neutrons have a high sensitivity in hydrogen detection. In this way, it becomes possible to measure the natural hydrogen content in wood and to prove changes in the wood wetness. This process can be analysed quantitatively in its local and time dependent development. The method can be used for the check of the value of waterproofing liquids or coatings, the localisation of inner defects and failures as well as generally for the description of moisture transport in wood.

Es wird eine Methode zur zerstoerungsfreien Bestimmung von inneren Defekten und insbesondere der Feuchteverteilung in Holz auf Basis der Durchstrahlung von Proben mit Neutronen vorgestellt. Im Gegensatz zur Roentgen- oder Gammastrahlung besteht bei Neutronen eine sehr hohe Empfindlichkeit gegenueber Wasserstoff. Dadurch wird es moeglich, sowohl den im Holz gebundenen Wasserstoff nachzuweisen als auch Feuchteveraenderungen zu beschreiben. Vorgenannte Prozesse koennen in ihrer raeumlichen und zeitlichen Entwicklung quantitativ erfasst werden. Das Verfahren kann fuer die Ueberpruefung der Wirksamkeit von Impraegnierungen und Beschichtungen, die Auffindung innerer Defekte und Fehlstellen sowie die Beschreibung des Feuchtetransportes in Holz eingesetzt werden.
