Experimental analysis of shear band formation in a seed layer

Formation of shear band during triaxial compression test was investigated experimentally in the samples of rape seeds, mustard seeds, pea seeds and wheat grain. The arrangement of seeds in the samples was fixed by pouring epoxy resin into sample voids. After setting of resin the sample was cut into slices in vertical direction perpendicular to the shear band and the distribution of grain displacement was analysed. The thickness of fully developed shear band was found to be approximately 12-16 times the mean seed diameter irrespective of the seed size
